This was the video I needed! Cognac (my pineapple conure) is now less anxious after practising recall with her
Thank you so much for this video! I just got my first bird, he is two months old and came to us clipped. I learned how much I love conures and he absolutely wants to fly, he can go a few feet now!
Thank you! This was so helpful♥️
My clipped lovebird fell from a rope today
(1m) and i’m scared he got frighten. But then i put up ropes a little lower, and he kept going. Blame myself for not thinking of padding.
I don’t flight training him jet. He is working on climbing and jumping. He’s a champ ♥️
Hey! My macaw is only 1 and I am not sure if she wants to fly or not. She does not really try by herself. How would I know if I should try or not?
Have a 7mo old cockatiel that was clipped but flight feathers are coming in. He wants to fly and randomly takes off on me. Keeps crashing and falling before I can get to him. Desperately trying to recall train to prevent the crash!!
How does everyone feel about plucking out those clipped feathers so they grow in faster? Is this something I can do (although I'd try to have a vet or someone else actually do it so he doesn't hate me)?
Do you have a video on how to get birds to take a treat from your hand? I can't find one. I'm taking care of a cockatiel for a month. He has made great progress in trusting me and working with me, but will not take anything from my hand as a treat. Do I need to withhold all food from his cage and only have him get food from me? (I've had multiple birds in the past, but not for a long time.) Also took in a budgie that someone rescued that was extremely wild! I do not leave seed in her cage and only feed her by hand. Yesterday, she flew clear across the room to me on her own to continue feeding after something startled her. Great progress, thanks to all your great videos! Love you guys and your birds!💕🕊 PS I now want to get another cockatiel of my own, but want to go to a breeder in order to get one that will choose ME. Any suggestions in Colorado?
my alexandrine was clipped when he was about 2,5 months. He will not be clipped again after the first moulting. Is that okay? I think he will not get hurt because its a small time. Sometimes he tries to fly and I think he will love flying @BirdTricks
How can you tell if she's hormonal?
I got my 2 lovebird parrots a few months ago and they’re around 6 months now. They have clipped wings from when I got them and they both try to fly often and I encourage it. I usually have them fly from their on their or in their cage to me since they always want to be with me. They do really well for having their wings clipped and I always praise and give them treats for it. I don’t move too far from them for them to fly to me so they can safely land on me without failing. I hope I’m doing all that right! Keep up the amazing and informative videos! They help a lot!
How about sunny. Is he still with u.I just started viewing your VLOGS. I saw sunny's story
I also saw it was 12 years ago. So is he still with u?
we adopted a blue headed pionus and Bronze wing pionus from a rescue in August. It has been a process developing skill training parrots, but also in evaluating where these birds are at physically and mentally as they were in foster/rescue for a long time. They have been with the rescue for at least 6 years. Age is uknown, but it is thought they are perhaps 15 years old. I suspect the bronze wing was previously in someone's breeding program. She has had health issues including egg binding and is more reserved with her trust. She is more likely to aggressively posture if she does not care for a person or interaction, though she is generally a chill personality if not pressured. The blue headed is more social, but also more fearful. By a long shot. When he first showed up, there were many fear flights and a lot of crashing that distressed me greatly. Once that settled down and he (randomly chosen pronoun as sex is not known) got more comfortable with his new home, there was much less crashing, but i noticed that his desire to fly remained. I had built a closet play space with a large tree perch in is that they can navigate to from where their cage sits about 2-3 feet away and pretty soon I was noticing that he was electing to fly back to the cage from the closet perch instead of climbing back along the branches we had arranged for them to navigate. At first it was awkward, but he has begun flying quite deftly back to the cage now and I have noticed that he will fly back to the cage from slightly further distances without crashing, though in those cases, i think he is flying more to escape because he is very cage bonded and really gets uncomfortable if brought away from the cage so i have had to desensitize him to home away from the cage gradually. If I keep him away too long or go a bit far, he will decide he does not want that and fly back to the cage, but I considered that ok as he is no longer uncontrolled and crashing, but generally landing nicely on the cage. I have worked to get him very comfortable not just with step up, but spending more time on my hand or shoulder in order to train him that I am a place he can go to for security, figuring that was the next logical step in ultimately training him to recall and simply be comfortable being outside the immediate vicinity of his cage. he looks so proud nd excited every time he has a nice flight. The bronze wig is a much larger, more heavily bodied pionus and seems less excited by flight, but will fly if she is excited enough of the blue headed launches and she simply gets prompted by his flight. At first, they would crash together, but she quickly learned to launch toward the couch or toward me and get a soft landing. She is the only one of the two that has landed on me. Generally it is because I am otherwise occupied and she gets bored and decides to fly over. Then she does that stand up tall and wag the tail thing which looks very much not stressed, but pretty self satisfied.
I keep hoping they will molt those clipped feathers, but so far they have not dropped a single clipped feather…
My 8 month old quaker parrot Kevin was clipped due to a disability (missing a foot), and he flies like a champ! When I brought him home in Nov 2020, he would "flutter" from the ground to the top of the ottoman, but I kept his play gym and playtime on the ground so he had more control over how close he could get to me or new toys while he was acclimating to his new home.
Kevin just started flying by himself. I always encouraged it with treats, but flying to a human (he loves all people) seems to be self-reinforcing, so he just keeps doing it!
I know I am one of the fortunate ones, and because of Kevin's foot disability, free flight has always been the dream so he can still enjoy being a bird.
Within the last two months, he has even started navigating doorways, flying around corners, and recovering well from overshooting a landing.
Next step is a batting cage and desensitization!
one of my birds I got recently was was from another person and her wings were fully grown out but she didn't have full control of her flights. I am guessing by her age that she was kept in a cage while she was fledging and didn't get to fledge properly so when I tried to do hands-off training and for some reason if she got distracted and flew away she would hurt herself a lot. luckily it was never something serious but this video Really helped! thank you!
er, My budgie wants to fly. She has been clipped by the pet store owner. I didn't want her to be but he did her before I got her. she flies around on the floor. Then Watches budgies on my phone. 🙂 I got her a few days ago. 🙂
All your birds are gorgeous.
I am thankful I found your YouTube channel. My husband are rescuing a 20 year old male blue and gold macaw ( possibly 2 if the family getting the female is unable to take her) and watching your videos are giving me the information I have been looking for.
I have ordered your food, cookbooks, and subscribed to the 3 toy bundle for large birds. Thank you for being so helpful for people wanting to do the best things for their parrots.😁💜
Jamieleigh: don’t be mean to comet
Blueberry: instantly scurries towards comet
🤣
How do you feel comfortable having Blueberry around Comet? I can never work up the courage to let my budgie out at the same time with my CAG. I'd do it very closely supervised of course but I just cannot…
Just today I drove 3 hours for a cockatiel. He is a year old and hours before I got him they decided to clip his wings. They didn't only clip the first 4-5 flight feathers…. they clipped his feathers down his whole wing! This came in perfect time for me! They even knew that the bird would get to fly all day in the bird room. I promised the little guy that his feathers won't ever be clipped again!
My conure i just got was eating a seed diet its been 2 days i got her to eat blueberries and peppers and i am transitioning into pellets. she likes to pace the perches when i come into the room i also just open the cage when i am in the room for a couple of hours. she flys out the cage to where i am but everytime i place my finger out to move her back to cage she bites my fingers she always goes for my fingers when i change food/ water as well not sure why she’s obsessed with fingers and biting them but if someone could lmk what to do id appreciate it. 👍🏾🖤
at least its organic 🤣
i love parrots omg sadly i am in another country :C
So helpful! My rescue Ekkie (got him when he was 7) was kept in cage and never learned to fly! He has very little confidence but a year after having him he stated to jump fly into my bed (very un gracefully). I used to the work fly every time he would and gave him a jack pot reward! I put up a rope by his cage and now when he’s on it (slightly higher than me). I am able to get him to fly to me if I have his whole treat jar! I’ve had to catch him a few times but he’s just learning to use his feet to catch himself! We’ve been doing one or two of those every morning, and I’m so happy with his slow and steady progress! You could tell he’s gaining confidence in his wings back! Thanks for the tips Jamie! Can’t wait to see him become sure of his ability to fly!
I have an owl
Pog new vid
Maybe make a video similar to this featuring Rocko flying? Since he’s the ‘weakest’ flyer of the bunch.
(And also because he hasn’t been in a video in so long and I really want to see him!!)
how could you tell Cressi was getting hormonal on your shoulder?
I’d love to see a video of all your birds! Like an introduction to each one. I’m sure it’d be a long video but I’d watch every minute! I absolutely love how passionate you guys are about your birds & their care! ❤️
i didn’t know that parrots acted differently when they’re hormonal, can someone explain in an age appropriate way? i know kids are probably watching this too
How do do you get your birds not to pull out your earring😂 mine will rip out my nose piercing
